A Grade 3 railway sleeper is a used sleeper that has all the characteristics of the above grades but can have more serious damage to most sides. Much higher level of splitting, decay and general defects than both grade 1 & 2. They should still have at least one good side but will have pockets of decay, although they remain generally structurally sound. Creosote treated.

Using creosote-treated railway sleepers
Reclaimed creosote-treated railway sleepers should no longer be used in high use areas, children’s play areas or any area where frequent skin contact will occur. Protective gloves should always be worn when handling creosote treated railway sleepers. They should be utilised in accordance with EU creosote legislation 2001/90/EC
